Episode 9 — Trigonometric Functions

Effect of q on y=cos x + q

Learners will be able to:

• Identify the effect of adding a constant q to the function y = cos x on its graph. • Describe how adding or subtracting a constant to the graph of y = cos x results in a vertical shift. • Explain why the period and amplitude of the graph remain unchanged when a constant is added or subtracted. • Identify the change in range that occurs when a constant is added or subtracted from the function y = cos x. • Sketch the graphs of y = cos x and y = cos x + q, showing the effect of adding a constant on the original graph.
