Episode 4 — Measurement

Effect of Changing Dimensions in a Shape

Learners will be able to:

• Identify the effect on the area of a shape when one side is doubled in length. • Explain why doubling both sides of a shape results in an area that is four times larger than the original. • Describe how multiplying all dimensions by a scale factor of k affects the new area, stating that it will be multiplied by k squared. • Calculate the effect on the volume of a cylinder when its radius and height are tripled. • Apply the concept of scale factors to determine the effect on the volume of a shape when all dimensions are multiplied by a scale factor of k.
