Episode 11 — Matter & Materials - Organic Molecules and Properties
Organic Molecules Naming Esters
Learners will be able to:
• Identify the functional groups involved in the formation of an ester through a condensation reaction between a carboxylic acid and an alcohol. • Describe the structure of an ester, including the oxygen atom that joins two carbon chains. • Name an ester by identifying the alkyl group from the alcohol side and assigning the prefix accordingly. • Assign the correct suffix "enoate" to the name of an ester based on the number of carbons in the carboxylic acid side. • Write the correct name of an ester, including both the alkyl group from the alcohol side and the carboxylic acid side.
