• Identify the substituents in an organic compound. • Assign positions to halogen substituents using a numbering system from left to right. • Determine the priority of functional groups over substituents when assigning positions. • Name side chains by counting the number of carbons and applying the corresponding carbon counting words. • Arrange substituents in alphabetical order at the front of the root word.
