Episode 4 — Chemical Equilibrium

Rates of Reaction

Learners will be able to:

• Describe the Maxwell-Boltzmann curve and its significance in showing the distribution of kinetic energy in particles of a substance. • Explain how collision theory accounts for the requirements for effective collisions, including minimum energy (activation energy) and correct orientation. • Identify the effect of temperature on the rate of reactions, including increased particle movement and higher chance of successful collisions. • Calculate the rate of reaction by measuring a change in a substance and dividing it by the unit of time. • Interpret graphs showing the relationship between concentration and rate of reaction, including the direct proportionality between these two variables. • Explain how catalysts speed up chemical reactions by decreasing activation energy or arranging particles for correct orientation.
