Episode 5 — Rate & Extent of Reactions
Rate and Extent of Reaction Collison Theory
Learners will be able to:
• Describe the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution curve and its significance in understanding the effects of temperature change on reaction rates. • Explain how collision theory relates to the conditions necessary for a chemical reaction to occur, including the minimum energy required (activation energy). • Identify the effect of increasing temperature on the rate of reactions, including the increased proportion of collisions with sufficient energy to result in a reaction. • Describe how catalysts work by providing an alternative reaction pathway and lowering the activation energy. • Explain how concentration affects the rate of reactions using collision theory, including the increase in number of particles and subsequent collisions at higher concentrations.
