• Identify the definitions of reduction and oxidation in terms of electron gain or loss. • Explain how to determine whether a substance has gained or lost an electron by looking at the elements it is bonded to. • Calculate the oxidation number of an element using simple rules for elements in groups 1, 2, and those that form ions with specific charges. • Determine the change in oxidation number of an element during a reaction and classify the reaction as redox or non-redox based on this information. • Apply the concept of oxidation numbers to identify whether a reaction is an oxidation or reduction reaction.
