Episode 7 — Electricity and Magnetism - Electrodynamics

Alternating Current

Learners will be able to:

• Identify the advantages of alternating current (AC) over direct current (DC) in transmitting electrical potential energy over large distances. • Explain how transformers work on the basis of electromagnetic induction and change the voltage of an AC input. • Calculate the maximum voltage from a given root mean square (RMS) voltage using the equation V RMS multiplied by the square root of 2. • Solve for the resistance of a device in an AC circuit using Ohm's law or the equation power RMS is equal to V RMS squared over R. • Apply the concept of average power in an AC circuit and understand that power values refer to average power.
