Episode 9 — Electricity and Magnetism - Electrodynamics

Motor Effect, DC and AC Generators

Learners will be able to:

• Describe the motor effect and how electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy. • Identify the direction of force in a motor using Fleming's left hand rule. • Explain how the interaction between magnetic fields generated by a current-carrying wire and a permanent magnet results in a force on the wire. • Determine the direction of rotation of a DC motor using Fleming's left hand rule. • Describe the function of a split ring commutator in a DC motor and explain its role in reversing the current after every half revolution. • Identify the key differences between AC and DC motors, including the use of slip rings versus a split ring commutator.
