What is an Element?

Learners will be able to:

• Define an element as a pure substance made up of only one kind of matter that cannot be broken down further, and a compound as two or more elements chemically combined to form a new substance • Give examples of elements (e.g. oxygen, gold, carbon) and compounds (e.g. water, carbon dioxide, sodium chloride), and explain that a compound has different properties from the elements that make it up
