Names and Symbols of Elements

Learners will be able to:

• Explain that each element has a name and a universal chemical symbol, and that many symbols are derived from Latin names (e.g. Fe for iron, Na for sodium, Au for gold) • Identify the names and symbols of the first 20 elements of the periodic table, and apply the rules for writing element symbols (a single capital letter, or a capital letter followed by a lowercase letter)
