Energy Transfer to Surroundings
Episode 1 — Energy Transfer to Surroundings
Useful & Wasted Energy
Learners will be able to:
• Define a system as a group of parts working together to perform a process, with input energy and output energy • Distinguish between useful energy and wasted energy in a working system • Identify the energy transfers taking place in a lawn mower, from chemical potential energy (fuel/food) to kinetic energy, heat and sound • Identify the useful and wasted energy outputs of everyday appliances (light bulb, fan, blender, drill, hair dryer, candle) • Explain why no energy transfer process is 100% efficient • Relate useful and wasted energy to the law of conservation of energy (input energy = useful output + wasted output)
