Episode 2 — Energy Transfer to Surroundings

Energy Transfer Diagrams

Learners will be able to:

• Explain the purpose of a Sankey diagram as a way of summarising and illustrating all the energy transfers in a system, including wasted energy • Interpret arrows in a Sankey diagram, showing that arrow direction indicates the direction of energy transfer and arrow width indicates the amount of energy transferred • Interpret a given Sankey diagram (e.g. filament vs energy-saver light bulb) to compare the energy efficiency of two systems • Calculate a missing energy value in a Sankey diagram using the law of conservation of energy • Identify an error in a Sankey diagram where input energy does not equal the sum of useful and wasted output energy
