Heat Transfer
Episode 6 — Heat Transfer
Radiation
Learners will be able to:
• Define thermal radiation as heat energy transfer that spreads by waves from a starting point. • Explain why heat energy is transferred from the sun to the Earth by radiation, since space is a vacuum with no particles. • Distinguish radiation from conduction and convection in terms of whether particles or contact between objects are required. • Identify examples of conduction, convection and radiation occurring simultaneously around a single heat source (e.g. a candle or fire). • Describe how heat energy radiates sideways from a heat source, through space, to a nearby object or person.
