Episode 8 — Heat Transfer
Heat Transfer Revision
Learners will be able to:
• Summarise and compare conduction, convection and radiation in terms of the particles and medium involved in each. • Identify which method(s) of heat transfer occur in everyday situations, such as cooking over a fire, drying washing in the sun, holding a hot mug, or a kettle heating water. • Explain why insulating materials such as polystyrene (styrofoam) and corrugated cardboard are used for takeaway hot drink cups. • Explain how a liquid-in-glass thermometer uses the expansion of a coloured liquid to indicate a change in temperature. • Interpret an investigation comparing a shiny surface and a dull black surface to show that dark surfaces absorb more radiant heat than shiny surfaces.
