Learners will be able to:

• Explain why insulating materials are needed in everyday life to reduce unwanted heat energy transfer and to save energy and money. • Describe how household insulation, such as ceiling material, curtains and carpets, reduces heat loss from a home in winter. • Explain how insulation (a geyser blanket and pipe lagging) reduces heat energy loss and electricity costs in a hot water system. • Distinguish between using insulation to keep an item hot, such as a thermos or insulated cup, and using it to keep an item cold, such as a cooler box. • Describe how a penguin's feathers trap a layer of air against its skin to insulate its body against heat loss.
