Episode 3 — Insulation & Energy Saving
Insulating Materials
Learners will be able to:
• Apply knowledge of insulators to solve practical everyday problems of keeping food and drinks hot or cold. • Explain, using the concept of conduction, why metal is a poor choice and cardboard is a good choice for serving hot food. • Explain how trapped air layers between plastic layers make a cooler box an effective insulator against heat gain. • Explain how increasing the distance between hot and cold appliances, and insulating each one, reduces unwanted heat transfer between them. • Suggest and justify practical solutions, based on insulating materials, for keeping different foods and beverages at their desired temperature.
