• Define a biological system as one based on energy transfers within and between organisms • Describe the energy transfers occurring in a marine food chain (plankton to krill to fish to seal to orca) • Describe the energy transfers occurring in a terrestrial food chain (sun to tree/grass to giraffe to lion) • Explain the role of photosynthesis in capturing solar energy and storing it as chemical potential energy • Explain how energy is lost as heat at each stage of a food chain, while total energy is conserved
