Episode 4 — The National Electricity Supply System
Electricity in the Home
Learners will be able to:
• Explain why using electricity efficiently in the home saves money and reduces environmental impact • Identify everyday household practices that waste electricity (e.g. leaving lights on, boiling a full kettle for one cup, using an oven to heat a room, half-loading a washing machine) • Suggest energy-efficient alternatives for common household appliances and habits (energy-saver bulbs, lids on pots, matching pot to hotplate size, sensors and timers for lights, geyser blankets, cold-water washing, line-drying washing) • Explain how heat loss occurs when doors or windows are left open while heating or cooling a room • Give examples of simple changes learners can make at home to use electricity more efficiently
